Reading a material

Suede, nubuck, patent and calf are not four colours of the same thing.

Put a black patent shoe next to a black suede one and you have two different objects. One throws light back at you; the other swallows it.

Light is the giveaway

Patent gives a hard, narrow highlight. Nappa gives a soft, broad one. Suede and nubuck give none, and instead change tone as the nap is brushed. The Material Archive is organised around that behaviour, not around price.

When you configure a pair, the surface on screen changes with the material, because the difference is the point.
