The case for one black shoe

Why the first thing KOVÉN made was also the plainest.

When we drew the first KOVÉN last, the argument in the room was not about style. It was about restraint: how much can be taken away before a shoe stops being itself.

The answer was less than we expected. A single piece of calf across the vamp, an apron stitched by hand, a low heel, a long line from heel to toe. Nothing that needs explaining.

Black is not the absence of a decision

Black leather shows the work. A poorly cut pattern cannot hide in it, and neither can a poorly finished edge. That is why the flagship stays black, and why the other colours are offered as choices rather than as the default.

A good shoe should be noticed last.
